Stadsboerderij Noordwijk

The center for mentally disabled people ‘ Willem van den Bergh’ is relocating more and more of its clients from their too secluded campus to homes in normal residential neighbourhouds. Reshuffling the campus, selling part of the terrein to a project developer, the center saw it unavoidable to relocate its daycare and leisure facilities.
Bart Aptroot and Joachim Karelse proposed to regroup some of these functions in one multifunctional building. The building offers the most seriously mentally disabled a protected inner world around an atrium, while the slightly mentally disabled find workshops that face the surroundings.
A second building accomodates a small community farm, visited and run by the clients as well as residents from the neighbourhood. It has rabbit shaped windows to see the rabbits inside and bird shaped windows to look at the birds.
